Q: Can you change a 1968 Mustang from Manual to Automatic?
I just wanted to know if I could change my 1968 Mustang from Manual to Automatic because I really can’t drive manual in the area that I live in. I know nothing about cars so I cant do this myself, I just wanted to know if I should take it to a shop and let them do it. And also how much would it cost?
A: About $2000. They will need to go a transmission, flex plate, starter, shifter, transmission mount.
And get rid off your clutch linkage, flywheel, and transmission.
Drive shaft length should be the same. If not then they need to find the correct one.
Q: I was wondering if you could put a 429 super cobra jet engine into a 1968 mustang?
Yeah, i want to restore an old mustang, and i think it would be really cool to put a 429 into a 1968. Then with like a 4-speed manual. Maybe put some nos on it. can someone help, I desperatly want to know.
Thanks
A: Here’s a link to put a 429/460 into a 67-70 Mustang. N.O.S. is an acronym, NOT a word!! Unless you have deep pockets, I wouldn’t recommend getting too worked up about a 429SCJ. Yes, it WILL fit between the shock towers, tight, but it fits.
Q: Hi, Does anyone have a good wiring diagram for a 1968 Ford Mustang?
I’m looking for a good wiring diagram for a 1968 Mustang. I need both the engine side and the instrument side if possible. Also any advice on where to install the engine ground strap would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.
A: i own a repair shop and auto zone or advance either one might have this on line,if not you would be better off getting a good repair manual for it because sometimes when you download stuff or print it out ,you loose some of the picture in between pages, and that wont help you much, but there’s plenty of repair manuals on these cars, and there pretty accurate also, good luck with it hope this helps.
Q: Which of the newer mustangs look like the 1968 Mustang GT?
I want to buy a mustang and I really like the 1968 Mustang GT model. I wish I could just own a ‘68 but I would be better off with a 2005-2009 model. I know for sure that I want a V6 automatic, with the premium package, with black racing stripes. A convertable top would be cool but I’m just as happy with a coupe. So which year should I go for?
A: None of the new mustangs will look like the classic ones. The most recent mustangs are considered “Retro” because the styling mimics that of the classic mustangs. I suggest you go for a coupe. The 2005-2008 mustangs are cheaper, and aren’t much different than a brand new one, so I suggest looking for those.
Q: What are the Factory Exterior and Interior Decals for a 1968 Mustang GT500?
hello im trying to figure out what decals were put on the 1968 mustang GT500 i just repainted my mustang and ready to order the original decals, any information is helpful thanks!
Please answer with back up information please no unhelpful comments, one said use google image but thats not a great source many mod their cars…if theres a catalog where would i find it..
A: You need to get a catalog from Year One or any other restoration type company. They can help you to no end!
Q: I am only 15 right now but im look to a 1968 mustang 289v8. Good first car?
I have found a blue 1968 mustang good condition little rust on back bumper. Its only 4000 dollars,But the driver seat and passenger seat are more like toyota camry seats. It also as push to start engine but i have to stick the key in first?
I can actually spend 18,000 dollars but i perfer to buy a cheap nmustang and buy parts for it
A: it will be a good first car for you… if you like maintaining it and learn how to if you don’t. Older cars like that require a lot more attention more often than newer cars and most people these days get tired of constantly being under the hood of classics after they buy them, and let them turn to junk or sell them. I say go for it if you’re a car guy. It also sounds like a pretty good deal for that car, they’re getting hard to find.
Q: How much would it cost to get an engine and transmission installed in a 1968 Mustang?
I’m looking at buying a ‘68 Mustang that comes without an engine or tranny. Everything on the car is in great condition. What would be the cheapest engine to go with (this car will be a first car and I don’t have alot of money)? What’s the going rate to get an engine or tranny installed in a car like this? Thanks!
A: Shops get $500 to remove and replace a engine, but a custom engine installation can cost a bunch at $80 a hour. Look for a used engine and trans from somebody upgrading their stock early Mustang, that would be the cheapest way to go.
Q: Difference in 1965 and 1968 mustang exterior width and length?
I was wondering how much larger the 68 mustang really is compared to the smaller body of the 65 mustang? Such as the width, length, and overall size difference of the two? Any measurements of the two years would be greatly appreciated especially if you could give a link to your source so I could check it out aswell.
I was interested on knowing this because I am thinking of getting one to either restore or already restored. Any comments on that would also be welcomed.

Q: What is the best engine to put into a 1968 mustang?
I want to restore a ‘68, and i need some help with picking the best engine. Preferably the best one to put in there.
A: First, YOU have to decide what YOU want out of the car. Are you doing this restore for you, or do you plan to sell it later on?
I have a ‘67 myself. When I started making changes to it, my Dad told me I shouldn’t do anything that would hurt the re-sale value. My response to him: there’s no need to worry about the re-sale value if there’s not going to be a re-sale. That was 20 years ago and I still have it.
Next item to consider: are you restoring it to what you want it to be? Then do whatever your heart desires with the engine. are you restoring it to enter it in shows, to be judged on authenticity? then go with the exact engine that it came with.
Mine came with a 289. My dad and I rebuilt that motor stock, with no modifications. After 225,000+ miles it was time for another rebuild. This time I swapped in a slightly modified 302.
You didn’t say what engine is in there now. If it’s a Straight 6…Keep It! I would love to do a 6 with dual exhaust and a 3-spd tranny. Clifford Performance ( http://www.cliffordperformance.net ) has a lot of equipment to hop-up a 6. If it has a V8 in it, or was set up for one, then go for the 302: good power, somewhat economical, plenty of parts/add-ons available.
Bottom line: it’s what YOU want out of the car…and the cost.
Hope this helps!
Q: What type of engine could fit, unmodified into a 1968 mustang, and where could I buy one?
Any answers are appreciated.
Thanks.
A: First off, i want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your sacrifices, service and dedication to this country. It is greatly appreciated and my The Lord God bless you and your group and keep you in his hands of protection at all times…
Like SVO said before me, the 67-68 mustangs were larger more “muscle carish” the the first gen Mustangs (64-66) THere are so many options for that car its crazy. Below are some companies that build crate motors. FOrget the price, because if you google search it, you can find some real bargains. BUt this will give you an idea of what you can fit and what kind of prices to expect should you go this route…

(check out that 514!)
YOU can even buy kits and build the motor the way you want. But like stated before, you can run small or big blocks in these bays.
Q: how long does it take a gas flooded engine, on a 1968 mustang, to dry up?
i have a 1968 mustang and it wont start becuase the engine is flooded, how long should i wait untill it will start again?
A: If it won’t start by the next day, you need to take out the plugs and dry them. You can also try some starting fluid, that may get it going.
Q: will a limited slip differential in a 1968 Mustang work while power braking?
I tried it but only 1 wheel seems to spin, however when I just punch the gas with no brakes both seemed to spin
A: It sounds like you have an open centre. Even with an open centre, both can spin if you have an even weight on both the rear tyres. My open centre 64 1/2 could do this too. The reason it won’t spin doubles when you apply the brakes is because one drum is likely tighter than the other. This is not an issue with a limited slip as they will constantly turn both axles at the same time. If you want to tell if you have an open centre or a limited slip, raise the rear of the car from the diff housing. Release the park brake and put the gearbox in neutral. Rotate one wheel forward, and if the other side rotates forward as well, you have a limited slip. If the other side does not rotate at all, or rotates backward, you have an open centre. Good luck.
Q: What is the amount of backspacing needed for front and rear wheels for a 1968 Mustang Coupe?
I would like to purchase 14″ or 15″ wheels.
The wheels will probably end up being 15X7. The back wheels will be deep dish.
A: How wide is the part you left out. My front runners have about 1.75″ backspcaing, by 15X8s have about 3.75 and my 15X10s have 4.5. But that is also with a shorter, Granada 9 inch.
Q: Will a 1968 mustang hood fit on a 1968 fairlane?
Are there any ford hoods that will fit? Does anyone know where I can get a hood online besides ebay?
A: No won’t match up to the grille work in front and lines in the hood are wrong..
Not the same fit.
Q: Is it difficlut and expensive to make a 1968 Mustang Coupe into a convertible?
It has a vinyl top but how much would it run me to turn it into a convertible?
A: Not a good idea. Most of the strength built into the body structure is in the body as a whole. If you cut the top you may have to strengthen it to keep it rigid (doors closing tight ect).
Cheaper to replace the vinyl top.
